National Insurance Number(NINo) is like the Social Security number or PAN number which is a unique number allocated to individuals made up of letters and numbers that never changes and remains the same. NINO is mandatory for students or individuals who want to work in the UK as the earnings whether employed or self-employed get registered under this number.
Each individual has a unique number that never changes and has to be provided to the employer before one starts working. It usually takes 6 to 8 weeks for the HM Revenue and Customs to allocate a NINo to an individual. It is hence advised for students to apply for it as they arrive in the UK. Students may be allowed to work before having their NINO in place but may be subjected to a higher tax bracket if they provide a temporary number to begin working.
The NINO can be applied through the UK governments website through the following link and also Back2study’s Welfare officer would help the registered students with the process if they face any difficulty.

Students would require their passports, Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and address details to apply for the NINO. You may contact the NINO helpline if you have any difficulty through 0800 141 2079
