Entering a new country all by themselves might sound very exciting but may get very overwhelming at the same time. The UK is a small country with a great infrastructure to support local transport for new visitors and is all the more welcoming. London being the main city, most of the students either land in London as their final destination or take an onward air journey to different parts of the country. Many students chose to take a bus or a train service if their end destination is within 3-4 hours journey from the airport as taxi service may get expensive.
Different ways of reaching your university accommodation:
University Pick Up:
Many universities arrange their own pickup services in the form of buses, closer to the intake start dates from popular UK airports (mainly London Heathrow). Students are advised to keep in conversation with the universities to ensure they do not miss the free pick up services offered by the universities. Most of these bus services are on specific dates and may require pre registration. Students may want to book their flight tickets based on these pick up dates if they are stationed to study far from London as getting to the University by taxi might become an expensive affair.
Bus Services:
The UK has a very well organised and affordable intercity coach transport network. You may be able to book buses from London to cities like Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham for £20 to £40 with bus companies like MegaBus, National Express, Flexi Bus etc. Please check the following online comparison websites to check the bus timetable and book your tickets. Please also check the terms of tickets before booking.
Train Services:
Getting around by train would be quicker than by bus to most of the cities from London, however the tickets may be expensive compared to the buses. Most of the outstation trains from London start from Kings Cross, Euston, Victoria, Waterloo. Paddington or London Bridge stations located in central London. Hence you will have to make your way to these stations from any of the London airports.
You may use The Trainline (www.thetrainline.com) for booking your train tickets. The cost of tickets may vary from £20 to £100+ depending on your destination and ticket availability. Super off peak tickets are cheaper if booked in advance. Please check the ticket terms while booking.
Taxi Service:
Local Taxis:
There are local cab services available from airport to local destinations or even for out stations. It is worth calling them to make a price comparison. Back2study’s London team will help you to arrange airport pickup through its local cab vendors to ensure you have the taxi ready to pick you up from the airport. Please discuss your landing timing with the Welfare Officer beforehand so they can book your cab service in advance. You will have to make payment to the taxi driver in cash when you meet them.
You may make a note of a few local taxi services in your area which may help you to book them in case you need them at times
Uber & Bolt:
You may download Uber and Bolt apps on your mobile which are widely used in the UK as an alternative to local taxis. Both the companies are reasonably priced and safe to travel. You may use them from the airport for pickup too if your journey is local.
